Putting the "Home" in the House

This is the kitchen in our first house. I've never been what I would call a cook. Although, oddly, the kitchen is one of the rooms that determines if I'm going to like the home. This was a sweet kitchen though I feel the need to add a disclaimer about the curtains. They were there when we moved in. They weren't great but...they didn't bother us either. So they stayed.
Like I said before, we have very few photos from before digital. It's not that we didn't take them, we absolutely did take them. And I think we put them in photo books. But finding them now...that would be a trick.

Our First House

Earlier this week I wrote about some of the things that makes my house feel like home.
Today I thought I would share similar thoughts on our first house. This isn't our first home
but it was the first house.

Guilty Indulgence

Confession...I have found myself watching QVC. I thought that would never happen. I thought of it as a perpetual informercial and thought I would never have the patience to watch it like a television show.

I became aware of QVC in the '80s. Someone close to me used to keep the show on for background noise. --Which I sort of get. But anytime the television is on I have to watch. Like a moth to a flame...I must go to it and watch. Background noise? But there's picture and people and moving things...I must watch.
In all honesty, I do get having a talking kind of television show on to fill silence. And QVC people are absolutely talking to you at home. But...they are not your friend.

But here's the thing. I have favorite sit-coms on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday...so Wednesday there is a void. And I do want to watch something (judge me if you must). We no longer have regular cable TV, so when flipping channels there's very few channels to land on. About a month or so ago, I was flipping channels and landed on QVC. Honestly, I didn't realize it was the shopping show at first. It was one of the chefs showing cooking in some sort of pressure cooker.

It didn't take long for me to realize he wasn't really showing me how to cook. He was showing me why cooking in this really cool bowl makes cooking so easy and fun.
Oh they sold the gadget bowls in four different colors. And, I love color. I was hooked. I had to see more things they had to show. I had to see what colors each thing is offered in. And I needed to know when each color sold out.

And after a few minutes with the microwave gadget they began to show these lovely crockery/bakeware tableware. Okay...they had it in the blue. They had it in the red, not to be confused with the cranberry, which they also had. They had it in the green (not a fan) and the spice/brown. And they had it in the black.

Oh, I was tuned in now. I began to imagine which color would I choose if I were to purchase....black. Definitely black.

I confessed my new QVC tableware obsession to my Mamacita. She understood. She has it! In the blue! The next time I was over, we used it for dinner. It is lovely!

Imagine my happy surprise when I got my first pieces for my birthday! And I got it in the black! LOVE! I know the ideal use is soup and sandwiches...but I couldn't wait to christen it. So, I used it for cereal. Two of my favorite things!!

Now if you excuse me...David's in the Kitchen on QVC. I gotta see what colors they have in everything.

Feeling At Home

So, here's what I've been thinking about...home and how we feel about it and when our house feels like home. Why do I think about this? I think because I enjoy reading so many bloggers describe their home and how they are updating it...even if it's just something like new throw pillows.

A Very Fun Birthday Indeed

Yesterday was the anniversary of the day I was born.  A small gathering formed at our favorite local (though still a chain) Italian restaurant. I honestly love that place. Sissy and her husband came, along with Dad and Mamacita. And of course daughter and her husband. I nice small group. Sis (the middle sister) couldn't make it...but we will celebrate on our own later.

I started out with a lovely Moscato which I absolutely adore. I haven't had wine in a long while. This was so nice and refreshing. Jordan and I had the pork tenderloin, which may be my new favorite.

Here we are outside our favorite restaurant.
We didn't get many pictures. Just a few as we were leaving the restaurant.

After dinner, we gathered at my house for an impromptu game of Password. Sissy has already proven to be the Password Queen. She is unbeatable! That is until Danielle used a secret weapon when I was on Sissy's team. Turns out I was the weakest link!

The secret weapon? More wine!! Lots of really good riesling. The wine was so good I didn't notice how many times D. refilled my glass. After I missed a few clues Sissy looked at Danielle and said "My partner is drunk!!".

What can I say? I wasn't at my best. But I had an enormously grand time.

Spring Babies

This goose made a nest in the middle of a median in our work parking lot. Yep, right there beside where people actually park.

Although I didn't get a picture of him, the Pappa goose was never far away. The two walked around the parking lot for a couple of days before deciding where the nest should be.

And then...BABIES

The first hatchling appeared at about 1:00. Over the next hours three more babies hatched. They left the nest the next morning for their new home. I'm going to miss seeing Mamma goose each day. She never left the nest. She was there every morning when I drove into the parking lot and still there every evening when I left.

Both parents and babies are doing well...

A new goose family right in the office parking lot? AWESOME.

Mother's Day was AWESOME

There we are...Mother and Daughter.

<<<====  This is the person that my baby became! She's beautiful and funny and incredibly sweet. She is one of my absolute favorite people. I mean, when she comes over we get giddy silly with laughter.

My Mother's Day started on Saturday. What a surprise to have a package delivered to my door. This is the sweetest note that makes the whole package so special! I've mentioned before how important birds are to our family. Both inside and outside birds. The note Danielle put with my gift is so sweet. She is so right, her gift does remind me of the Blue Bird House Memory.

A Lazy Almost Summer Day

It's a lazy almost summer day here in NC. A little humid for my tastes...but the sun is out and it is beautiful.

I took this picture "that time" I was at the Cherry Blossom Festival in D.C. It makes me smile.

I discovered a journal today that has some fun pithy sayings...or prompts. It is called "The Journal of Awesome". I was completely drawn to the title. When I flipped through I saw a few awesome things that made me smile.
So, when I got home I went straight to the internet to check out the story of the "Journal of Awesome". I will say it is likely that I am way behind on learning about this nugget. Turns out the journal grew from a book that grew from a blog. And the first book was published four years ago. Well, even though I'm quite late to this party, I have to say the thought of journaling about "AWESOME" is, well, awesome. It's nice to remember big and little things that make you happy. For me, today it was:

  • Finding the picture I'm posting and
  • My husband coming home and surprising me with fresh Krispy Kreme doughnuts! AWESOME!
